The 4Cs Explained: Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat

by JBR Jeweler on Aug 15, 2026
Close view of a lab grown diamond ring by JBR Jeweler

Every diamond certificate reports the same four measures. They are not equally important, and knowing which ones your eye actually notices is the difference between spending well and spending needlessly.

Here is what each one means, ranked by how much it affects what you see.

1. Cut — the one that matters most

Cut is the only C that is about human skill rather than the stone's raw properties. It measures how well the diamond's facets have been proportioned, angled and polished to handle light.

A diamond's brilliance comes from light entering through the table, bouncing off the internal facets, and returning to your eye. Get the angles right and almost all the light comes back. Get them wrong and light leaks out of the bottom of the stone, which reads as dullness or a dark centre — regardless of how good the colour and clarity grades are.

Cut is graded Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor. On IGI reports for round brilliants you may also see Ideal.

Our advice: do not compromise here. An Excellent cut, SI1 clarity, G colour diamond will out-sparkle a Poor cut, VVS1, D colour diamond every single time, and cost less. Cut first, always.

One caveat: formal cut grades are assigned to round brilliants. Fancy shapes — oval, pear, cushion, emerald — are usually reported with polish and symmetry grades instead, so you have to judge proportions and the stone itself rather than lean on a single letter grade.

2. Colour — how much you notice depends on the setting

Colour grades run from D to Z, measuring absence of colour. D is completely colourless; by Z there is an obvious yellow or brown tint.

  • D–F — Colourless. No visible tint. The premium grades.
  • G–J — Near colourless. No tint visible to the eye once set, especially face-up. This is where most sensible money goes.
  • K–M — Faint. A warm tone becomes visible, particularly in larger stones.
  • N–Z — Noticeable colour.

Grading is done face-down against a white background under controlled light, which is far harsher than how anyone sees a ring. Face-up, in a setting, on a hand, the differences compress dramatically.

Where the metal changes the maths: in yellow or rose gold, warmth from the metal reflects into the stone anyway, so a G or H looks identical to a D and costs considerably less. In platinum or white gold, a colder metal makes any warmth slightly more apparent, so it is worth staying in the F–H range.

Larger stones show colour more readily than small ones, so nudge the grade up as carat weight climbs.

3. Clarity — what "eye clean" really means

Clarity grades the internal inclusions and surface blemishes formed during growth. The scale, from cleanest down:

  • FL / IF — Flawless, Internally Flawless.
  • VVS1 / VVS2 — Very Very Slightly Included. Difficult to see even at 10x magnification.
  • VS1 / VS2 — Very Slightly Included. Visible at 10x, not to the eye.
  • SI1 / SI2 — Slightly Included. Easy at 10x, usually still invisible to the eye.
  • I1–I3 — Included. Visible without magnification.

The phrase that matters is eye clean: no inclusion visible to a normal eye at normal viewing distance. Most VS2 and many SI1 stones are eye clean, and they cost far less than VVS grades that look identical once on a hand.

Position beats grade. An SI1 whose inclusion sits near the girdle where a prong can cover it is a better buy than a VS2 with a dark crystal directly under the table. Look at the stone or the plotted diagram, not just the letters.

Shape matters too. Step cuts — emerald, asscher, baguette — have large open facets that act like windows, so inclusions show much more readily. For those, aim for VS2 or better. Brilliant cuts hide inclusions in their facet pattern, so SI grades work well.

4. Carat — weight, not size

Carat is a unit of weight: one carat is 0.2 grams. It is not a measure of how big the stone looks, and the two can differ significantly.

A poorly proportioned stone can carry weight in a deep pavilion where nobody sees it, appearing smaller face-up than a well-cut stone of the same weight. Shape changes this too — for the same carat weight, elongated cuts like oval, marquise and pear present more surface area to the eye than a round or a cushion.

Buy just under the round numbers. Prices step up sharply at 0.50, 1.00, 1.50 and 2.00 carats. A 0.95ct is visually indistinguishable from a 1.00ct and can cost meaningfully less. The same applies at every threshold.

Putting it together

If you are optimising a budget, this order works for most people:

  1. Cut — Excellent. Do not trade this away.
  2. Clarity — the lowest grade that is still eye clean. Usually VS2 or SI1.
  3. Colour — G–H for white metals, H–J for yellow and rose gold.
  4. Carat — spend whatever remains, and shop just below the round thresholds.

That combination buys a stone that looks superb on a hand, because it spends money on what the eye registers and saves it on what only a loupe can find.

If you would like help reading a specific certificate, get in touch — we are happy to talk through one with you.
