Asscher Cut vs Emerald Cut: Key Differences & How to Choose

by Light Gold Diamond on Oct 08, 2026
Asscher Cut vs Emerald Cut: Key Differences & How to Choose

Quick Answer

Asscher cut is a square step cut with clipped corners, a high crown and deep pavilion that creates a concentric "hall of mirrors" pattern. Emerald cut is the rectangular version of the same step-cut family, with long parallel facets that create broad flashes of light.

  • Choose Asscher if you want a vintage, Art Deco look, a compact square silhouette and a bit more sparkle in a step cut.
  • Choose emerald if you want a stone that looks larger per carat, elongates the finger and has a sleek, minimalist feel.
  • Both show inclusions and body color more than brilliant cuts, so clarity and color grades matter more than with a round or oval.

What Is an Asscher Cut?

The Asscher cut was introduced in 1902 by Joseph Asscher of the Asscher diamond company in Amsterdam. It is a square step cut with deeply cut corners, giving it an octagonal outline. The traditional version has 58 facets; the modern Royal Asscher® cut, launched by the Asscher family in 2001, uses 74 facets.

What makes an Asscher distinctive is its depth. A high crown, a small table and a steep pavilion create rows of reflections that appear to step down toward the center of the stone, like looking into a tunnel of squares. Many buyers describe this as a windmill pattern formed by the corner facets.

Best for: buyers who love Art Deco and vintage jewelry, want a square stone that isn't a princess cut, or prefer a compact, bold center stone.

What Is an Emerald Cut?

The emerald cut takes its name from the step-cutting method originally developed for emerald gemstones, which protects brittle material while showing off color. In diamonds and moissanite it is a rectangular step cut, usually with 57 or 58 facets arranged in long parallel rows on the crown and pavilion.

Instead of scattered sparkle, an emerald cut produces wide, dramatic flashes of light as it moves, often called the hall-of-mirrors effect. Its large, open table gives a clear view into the stone, which is why clarity matters so much.

Best for: buyers who want maximum visual size per carat, an elongated look on the hand, or a clean, understated, timeless design.

Key Differences Explained

1. Shape and proportions

The core difference is ratio. An Asscher is essentially square (1.00–1.05). An emerald is a rectangle, and its ratio changes the personality of the stone: around 1.30 looks fuller and more traditional, while 1.50 and above looks long and slim. If you like the Asscher's pattern but want a slightly longer outline, ask for a squarer emerald (about 1.20–1.30) — sometimes called a "square emerald" — but note it is not the same as an Asscher, which has a higher crown and larger corners.

2. Sparkle and light performance

Neither shape is designed for maximum brilliance like a round cut. Step cuts trade sparkle for clarity of pattern and broad flashes of light.

  • Asscher: the higher crown and deeper pavilion return a little more scintillation and give the stone more depth and "life."
  • Emerald: flatter, larger flashes; elegant and calm rather than glittery.

3. Apparent size

At the same carat weight, an emerald cut usually looks larger than an Asscher because more of its weight spreads across its length and less is hidden in depth. If your priority is visual size on a budget, emerald gives more "spread" per carat.

4. Clarity requirements

Step cuts act like a window. With fewer, larger facets, there is less sparkle to hide inclusions.

  • Emerald cut: aim for VS2 or higher, and check that the stone is eye-clean in a video, especially near the table.
  • Asscher cut: VS2 is often enough, though VS1 gives extra peace of mind in larger sizes. With lab-grown diamonds, higher clarity costs far less than in mined diamonds, which makes step cuts an easier choice.

5. Color visibility

Step cuts show body color more than brilliant cuts. For a bright, white look in platinum or white gold, many jewelers suggest G color or better, rising to F or better above 2 carats. In yellow or rose gold, H can still look white.

6. Durability

Both shapes have cut (truncated) corners, so they are less prone to chipping than princess or square-cornered stones. Four prongs or V-prongs on the corners, or a bezel, add protection for everyday wear.

7. How they look on the hand

  • Emerald elongates the finger and suits longer or slimmer hands as well as anyone who wants a slimming effect.
  • Asscher gives a balanced, geometric look and works well on shorter fingers when paired with a thin band, or as a bold statement on any hand.

Lab-Grown Diamond vs Moissanite in Step Cuts

Most of our Asscher and emerald rings are available in IGI-certified lab-grown diamond and in moissanite. The material changes how a step cut looks:

Lab-grown diamond

Moissanite

Hardness (Mohs)

10

9.25

Look in a step cut

Crisp white flashes, clean hall-of-mirrors pattern

More rainbow fire; noticeably more colorful flashes

Optical note

Single refractive — facet lines stay sharp

Double refractive — some stones can show slight facet doubling when viewed at an angle

Grading

Graded for color, clarity and cut (IGI / GIA)

Usually sold as colorless (D–F) with a manufacturer warranty

Price

Higher

Lower

Our take: if you want the classic, glassy hall-of-mirrors look, choose lab-grown diamond. If you love extra color and fire and want the most size for your budget, moissanite is a strong, ethical alternative.

Price: Which Costs More?

Per carat, Asscher and emerald cuts are generally priced below round brilliants of the same quality, because cutting them preserves more of the rough. Between the two, prices are usually close; Asscher can cost slightly more in some sizes because its deeper proportions use more weight for a smaller face-up size. Since an emerald looks bigger per carat, many buyers find it the better value for visual size.

The biggest price levers are the same for both: carat weight, color, clarity, and whether you choose lab-grown diamond or moissanite.

Best Settings for Each Cut

Asscher cut

  • Halo — a square halo increases face-up size and frames the windmill pattern.
  • Vintage / Art Deco — milgrain edges and geometric shoulders match the cut's 1920s heritage.
  • Solitaire with four corner prongs — shows off the square symmetry.

Emerald cut

  • Three-stone — tapered baguettes or trapezoid side stones echo the step facets.
  • Hidden halo — adds sparkle from the side without changing the clean top view.
  • East-west or classic solitaire — modern, minimalist and elegant.
  • Pavé or plain band — a thin band makes the center stone look larger.

Which Should You Choose? A Simple Checklist

Choose Asscher if you:

  • Love vintage, Art Deco or geometric design
  • Prefer a square stone with depth and a little more sparkle than an emerald
  • Want a bold, compact center stone

Choose emerald if you:

  • Want the largest look for your carat weight
  • Like an elongated, finger-slimming silhouette
  • Prefer calm, mirror-like flashes over glitter
  • Want a timeless, minimalist style

Still undecided? Compare both cuts in person or on video before you buy — step cuts look very different in motion than in still photos. [CTA: Book a virtual consultation / request a video of your stone]

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an Asscher cut the same as a square emerald cut?

No. Both are step cuts, but an Asscher has larger cut corners, a higher crown, a smaller table and a deeper pavilion, which create its concentric "windmill" pattern. A square emerald cut is flatter, with a larger table.

Which looks bigger, Asscher or emerald?

An emerald cut looks bigger at the same carat weight. Its rectangular outline spreads the weight across its length, while an Asscher holds more weight in its depth.

Which sparkles more, Asscher or emerald?

An Asscher usually shows slightly more sparkle because of its higher crown and deeper pavilion. Neither sparkles like a round brilliant; both are prized for bold flashes of light and clarity.

What clarity should I choose for an emerald or Asscher cut?

For an emerald cut, choose VS2 or better and confirm it is eye-clean. For an Asscher cut, VS2 is usually enough. Always review a video of the actual stone.

What color grade is best for step cuts?

G or better is recommended for white gold or platinum, and F or better for stones above 2 carats. H can look white in yellow or rose gold.

Are Asscher and emerald cuts good in moissanite?

Yes. Moissanite step cuts show more colorful fire than diamonds and cost less. Some moissanite stones can show slight facet doubling when viewed at an angle due to double refraction.

Are Asscher and emerald cuts durable for everyday wear?

Yes. Both have cut corners, which reduce chipping risk. Prongs or a bezel that protect the corners add extra security.

Are lab-grown Asscher and emerald diamonds real diamonds?

Yes. Lab-grown diamonds have the same chemical, physical and optical properties as mined diamonds and are graded by labs such as IGI and GIA.
