Every Diamond Shape Explained, and Who Each One Suits

by JBR Jeweler on Aug 15, 2026
Diamond engagement ring by JBR Jeweler

Shape is the first thing anyone notices about a ring and the decision most people find hardest. It is also the one choice where personal taste genuinely should lead — but there are practical differences worth knowing before you follow it.

Two terms first, because they explain most of what follows.

Brilliant cuts have triangular and kite-shaped facets arranged to maximise sparkle. They scatter light, which flatters the stone and hides inclusions.

Step cuts have long, flat, parallel facets like a staircase. They produce broad flashes rather than fine sparkle, and act like windows into the stone — elegant, but far less forgiving of inclusions and colour.

Round Brilliant

Fifty-seven or fifty-eight facets engineered over a century specifically to return light. No shape sparkles more, and none is more forgiving of a slightly lower colour or clarity grade.

It is also the most expensive per carat, for two reasons: demand, and yield. Cutting a round from rough wastes more material than almost any other shape.

Suits: anyone who wants maximum sparkle and does not want to think about it too hard. The safe, permanent classic.

Oval

A brilliant cut stretched. Because it is elongated, an oval presents more surface area face-up than a round of the same weight — it looks bigger for the money. It also lengthens the finger.

Watch for the bow-tie: a dark band across the centre caused by the setting blocking light. Every oval has one to some degree; in a well-proportioned stone it is faint. Always look at the actual stone face-up before committing.

Suits: people who want a round's sparkle with more presence and a more distinctive outline.

Pear

A brilliant cut with one rounded end and one point — a round and a marquise combined. Elongating, striking, and it wears larger than its weight suggests.

The point needs protection. A V-prong at the tip is essential, not decorative. Pears also show bow-ties, and symmetry is unforgiving — the point must sit exactly in line with the centre of the rounded end, or the stone looks off-kilter on the hand.

Suits: those who want something recognisably different without leaving classic territory.

Marquise

An elongated brilliant with points at both ends. It has the largest face-up area per carat of any shape — the maximum visual size for your budget.

Both points need V-prongs. Bow-ties are common and can be pronounced. Symmetry is critical.

Suits: people prioritising visible size, and those drawn to a vintage or regal silhouette.

Cushion

A square or rectangle with rounded corners, sometimes called a pillow cut. Modern cushions come in two facet styles: standard, which gives larger flashes, and "crushed ice", which scatters light into a glittery, textured look.

Rounded corners are structurally sound and less prone to chipping than sharp ones. Cushions carry a softer, more antique character than a round.

Suits: anyone who wants warmth and a vintage feel without sacrificing sparkle.

Emerald

The definitive step cut. Rectangular with cut corners and long parallel facets that produce a hall-of-mirrors effect rather than fine sparkle.

Its open table is a window. Inclusions and colour show far more readily here than in any brilliant cut, so budget for a higher clarity grade — VS2 or better — and a better colour. Elongated and elegant on the hand.

Suits: people drawn to restraint, architecture and Art Deco. Those who find heavy sparkle showy.

Asscher

A square emerald cut with more dramatically cut corners, giving it an octagonal outline and a deep, concentric "windmill" pattern down through the stone.

Same clarity and colour caution as the emerald cut. Unmistakably 1920s.

Suits: lovers of Art Deco and geometry.

Princess

A square brilliant. Sharp corners, strong sparkle, and excellent yield from the rough — which is why it costs less per carat than a round.

Those four corners are the thinnest, most vulnerable points on the stone. They must be covered by prongs. Nearly all princess-cut chips happen at an exposed corner.

Suits: people who want brilliance in a modern, geometric outline at a better price than a round.

Radiant

The outline of an emerald cut with the faceting of a brilliant — cut corners, rectangular or square, but sparkling rather than stepped.

It gives you emerald-cut elegance with brilliant-cut forgiveness on clarity and colour. The cut corners are structurally sturdier than a princess.

Suits: anyone torn between an emerald and a princess. This is the answer.

Heart

A brilliant cut with a cleft. Symmetry is everything — the lobes must match and the cleft must be sharply defined. Below about 0.75 carats the shape becomes hard to read once set.

Suits: those who want the sentiment to be unmistakable. Best at larger sizes.

Baguette

A small, elongated step cut, usually rectangular or slightly tapered. Rarely a centre stone; most often used as side stones flanking a main diamond, or channel-set in a band.

Suits: accents, Art Deco designs, and adding width without bulk.

Antique cuts: Old Mine, Old European and Rose Cut

These predate modern optical engineering and were cut by hand, often by candlelight — which is exactly how they were meant to be seen.

Old Mine Cut — a cushiony outline with a small table, high crown and large open culet. Chunky, warm flashes rather than fine sparkle.

Old European Cut — round, the direct ancestor of the modern brilliant, with a smaller table and taller crown. Softer, more romantic light return.

Rose Cut — flat-bottomed with a domed, faceted top and no pavilion. Subtle, glassy, almost matte. Wears very low on the finger.

Suit: people who find modern brilliance too bright or too uniform, and want something with character and history.

Practical shortcuts

  • Want maximum sparkle? Round, then radiant or cushion.
  • Want maximum size per carat? Marquise, then oval and pear.
  • Want to lengthen the finger? Oval, pear, marquise, emerald.
  • Working with a lower clarity grade? Stay with brilliant cuts. Avoid emerald and asscher.
  • Hard on your hands day to day? Round, oval, cushion and radiant have no exposed points to chip.
  • Want something quieter? Emerald, asscher or a rose cut.

Every shape here is available in both lab grown diamond and moissanite. If you would like to see two shapes side by side before deciding, book a virtual appointment and we will show you.
